“I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive Scheduled for May 17th!

Hey reKindlers! We’ve got some exciting news! May 17th is going to be our biggest “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive to date! We will be running multiple drives across America, and we are looking for more reKindlers to join in!

Confirmed cities so far include Phoenix, San Diego, and Boston and a few others. Get your city involved by contacting us today to see what it takes to run one of these drives (hint, it’s super easy… you just ask people to donate backpacks and materials, then go find people who need the materials).

Instant Checkmate has donated over a hundred packed backpacks for the Instant Checkmate “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive in San Diego. Super exciting, they are our first legit corporate sponsor! And Lake Pleasant Elementary  School has also committed to running a drive on the same day!

All this is great, but we still need YOUR help to run a drive in YOUR city! It’s so fun, easier than you think, and a fantastic experience for all involved. Contact us today to see how you can get involved!

Photos From Our First “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive!

So many people helped make this weekend happen. So many good people. First time reKindler Jonnata Mata said it best on her Facebook post: “What a great day. My heart is happy. Everyone was so grateful. Some even came to tears. Some jumped for joy. It was AWESOME!! I teared up quite a bit because it was such a good feeling. Thank you for motivating us to do this!!”

All backpacks found themselves a second life and an appreciative owner. It was incredible to see people down on their luck actually be happy for a moment.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Without you, this event wouldn’t have been possible.

The “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive IS TODAY!

Don’t forget, the “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive starts at 11AM TODAY! We are meeting at the Safeway parking lot on McDowell and 3rd (340 E McDowell Rd, Phoenix AZ 85004).

For up to date information, directions, or anything else you need use our Facebook page located here:

If you’re not able to distribute the backpacks and supplies but you still want to donate, don’t worry, there’s still time! You can just meet us at 11 and drop off your donations right there (and that way you can collect some hugs while you’re there!)

Looking forward to seeing you all, and we are loving the pictures of people with their donations!

reKindle Co-Founder Kaylee Hooley Wins President’s Volunteer Service Award!

We could not be more proud! reKindle Co-Founder, Kaylee Hooley, was recognized today by President Barack Obama and The Corporation for National Community Service! Not many people ever get a letter from the White House signed by the POTUS. This is such an honor that Kaylee’s efforts to help homeless people has been acknowledged and rewarded.

Her school, Lake Pleasant Elementary, has also pledged to do a school wide “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive at the end of the year. What an unbelievable day for Kaylee and reKindle!

Here is the award and the letter from The President of the United States of America!
The President's Volunteer Service Award Letter from the White House and Barack Obama

The letter from the president reads:

“Congratulations on receiving the President’s Volunteer Service Award, and thank you for helping to address the most pressing needs in your community and our country.

In my Inaugural Address, I stated that we need a new era of responsibility-a recognition on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our Nation, and the world. These are duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit than giving our all to a difficult task. Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise.

Our nation faces the most challenging economic crisis in a lifetime. We will only renew America if we all work together. Individuals, the private sector, and government must combine efforts to make real and lasting change so that each person has the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

While government can open more opportunities for us to serve communities, it is up to each of us to seize those opportunities. Thank you for your devotion to service and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.”

What a Great Day to be a reKindler!

BIG NEWS today after a whirlwind day yesterday! Our launch went really well, already getting in our first donations and set up some big opportunities for some new events, including partnering with local schools for a big “I Got Your Back” Backpack Drive at the end of the school year, a possible event in San Diego, and an event in Boston later in the year!

But the biggest of the big news is that our youngest reKindler, Kaylee Hooley, has been recognized for her work with reKindle by President Obama! I just got word that she will be given a certificate signed by the POTUS tomorrow at a school assembly for her outstanding community outreach. We couldn’t be more proud right now!

The thing that got her noticed was her video she posted on YouTube of our first Helping Homeless event. (shown below)

Way To Go Kaylee! And thank you everybody for a really successful day 1!

Our Inspiration

Over the summer we saw a viral video which really touched us. We still don’t know who these guys are, but they are partially responsible for this entire charity that we do now. We want to take what they started and push it even further, hopefully changing the world as we go!

On our first event, my inspired daughter took her iPod and unknown to us, started making her own video. She has never edited video before but when we got home she ran upstairs and taught her self to edit, so she could present me with this to use to inspire others:

This made me so proud. This is what it’s all about, and why we do what we do!

“I GOT YOUR BACK” Backback Drive SET for 3/15

Our next help the homeless event is scheduled for March 15th, and this time we need your help more than ever! We are changing things up a bit and doing a backpack drive!

If you or your kids have any old backpacks laying around that aren’t being used anymore, there are lots of homeless people who could really use them. And if you really want to help, feel free to fill up your donated backpack with items to help homeless people make it through their day or week. Socks, hand towels or wash cloths, food, gatorade, wet wipes, beanies for the winter nights, blankets, or anything else you think may help are all good items to fill your backpack with.

You can either mail your backpacks to 325 West Melinda Lane
Phoenix, AZ 85027 or you can meet us on Saturday with your backpack(s) and help us find somebody who could really use it. The event starts in the Safeway parking lot at 340 E. McDowell, Phoenix, Arizona 85004. Be there at 11AM! More information can be found on our Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/events/722527737787668/

We really need your help so please consider donating ASAP!
